Hoof Packing Instructions
Material used for this sheet is Vettec’s Equi-Pak™

Fig.1 – Hoof-Pack Cartridge & Tip

Typical Hoof Pack Cartridge & Tip. Shown is a 180 cc cartridge of Vettec’s urethane hoof-packing material.

Foam board with sticky back from Vettec can help facilitate the job.

Fig.3 – Horse Stands on Sticky Side

Start by peeling the foam backing and allowing the horse to stand on the foam board sticky side.

If using a large shoe you may want to trim the foam & tape it to the hoof to prevent leaking at edges.

Fig.5 – Inject the Urethane Material

Inject the urethane packing material into the cavity between the sole & the foam board. It sets fast!

Remove the tape and remove the foam board after the urethane packing has set (about 30 seconds).

Fig.7 – Urethane Set on Sole

The urethane provides a uniform sole protection. When used with SOUND HORSE horseshoes, the urethane will securely lock into the patented concaved rim pad relief.

With the packing set and the foam board removed, the job is complete and the horse is ready for work.

APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS

Equi-Pak™ (by Vettec) is a fast setting, 25-30 second cure, liquid urethane hoof packing material that provides durable, shock absorbent, cushioned support which retains its shape and flexibility. Equi-Pak™ adheres to the sole sealing out moisture and debris, protecting both the frog and sole.
PLEASE NOTE
• Best used between 65 and 85F (18 to 29 C).
• Best done while wearing latex or rubber gloves.
CARTRIDGE PREPARATION
  1. To open cartridge, remove the tip with nippers. Insert cartridge into dispenser, label side up.
  2. Before attaching the mixing tip, equalize the cartridge by squeezing out a small amount to ensure that both sides are dispensing evenly.
  3. Attach tip by pressing and twisting clockwise
HOOF PREPARATION
  1. Trim and conservatively pare out the sole, leaving some exfoliated sole. Clean well with a wire brush.
  2. DRY HOOF THOROUGHLY using a heat gun or hair dryer. Don’t overheat!
  3. If the hoof is oily, wipe the affected areas with a cloth moistened with DENATURED ALCOHOL being careful not to saturate the hoof. Dry thoroughly. DO NOT USE ACETONE!
PROCEDURE: WITH PADS
  1. Pads are not necessary with Sound Horse horseshoes
PROCEDURE: WITHOUT PADS
  1. Wire brush the sole and dry thoroughly with a heat gun or hair dryer.
  2. Apply the Sound Horse “glue-on” horseshoe. No “seating out” is necessary since the Sound Horse shoes have a patented concaved rim pad that will lock the urethane hoof pack in place.
  3. For larger shoes (1.5, 2 & 3) you might consider using mesh reinforcement. Cut a piece of Vettec “Equi-Mesh” inch smaller than the outline of the shoe & pop into the bottom of the shoe… this will be held loosely in the concaved relief.
  4. With the frog turned upward, apply Equi-Pak underneath the web of the shoe and fill in the sole until the desired level is achieved. This is usually to the top of the shoe.
NOTE: For added support, load to ground level by using a Foamboard.
  5. Hold the hoof until the Equi-Pak sets, approximately 25-30 seconds, then release.
PLEASE NOTE:
  • Areas of wetness, bleeding, or infection should not be covered. Once healed, use the product.
  • During hot weather conditions, Equi-Pak™ may cure at a higher temperature. Equi-Pak™ may be applied in layers to reduce heat.
  • Equi-Pak™ will adhere to leather and rubber pads, as well as some types of urethane pads.
COLD CONDITIONS (Below 65 F)
  • Failure to keep the hooves, shoes, and Equi-Pak™ warm will dramatically slow the cure time.
  • Store the cartridges in an insulated container warmed with microwaveable heat pads or 1 to 2 tightly capped gallon jugs filled with hot water.
  • In freezing temperatures, 32 F or less, the shoes must be warmed to keep condensation from forming on them and preventing a bond with the urethane.
HOT CONDITIONS (Above 85 F)
  • Equi-Pak™ will set very quickly. To slow the set time, store the material in an insulated cooler with 1 or 2 freezer packs.
  • Note: In hot weather conditions, Equi-Pak™ may cure at a higher temperature. When temperature is an issue, Equi-Pak™ may be applied in layers to reduce heat.
