ArticlesCrack Repair – Internet Videos & Articles
Sutures, braided repair fabrics & repair adhesives are available
from Sound Horse
Dr. Scott Morrison – http://www.equilox.com/instructionsForUse/howToVideo.html
This video is on the Equilox™ (brand name) website. It will show
Scott using several layers of a braided polymer fabric (not
fiberglass) saturated in acrylic adhesive (epoxy-methylmethacrylate)
to bridge & stabilize a quarter crack. Note that he uses stretch
wrap to secure the patch while it cures. Hoof is on the ground
during cure – no need to hold hoof. These repairs are remarkably
rigid.
Cure Temperatures: If you are concerned about the
exothermic cure temperatures of the standard acrylic adhesive
(epoxy-methylmethacrylate… slow set) used in the equine industry,
check out this brief article:

Aaron Gygax –
http://www.soundhorse.com/technicalarticles/quartercrackrepair.htm
A brief article with photos from soundhorse.com that shows a
technique to use sutures to lace a quarter crack without penetrating
the hoof wall. This was done by Aaron Gygax, a Swiss farrier, while
he worked at Rood & Riddle with Dr. Scott Morrison. A bit more
complicated but a useful technique to understand.
Ian McKinley –

Ian McKinley (drain) – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nLqOOtfOL84
These two videos show Ian doing a more traditional crack repair
using stainless sutures. Ian drills the hoof wall & inserts the
sutures from both sides of the crack & twists in center and then
stabilizes the crack with a mix of chopped fiberglass and acrylic
adhesive. He uses a sheet of a food wrap (saran wrap?) to cover the
repair while it cures and uses a rasp to clean up the patch.
Here are two additional farrier repairs shown on You Tube that
may prove useful:
Doug Anderson – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vpW2F9fm-fY
A video from AFJ TV (American Farriers Journal) that shows a
different technique used by Maryland farrier Doug Anderson.
Patrick O’Hara – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PVXLxFRFEP8
This is a short but clear video from oharashoeing.com that
demonstrates another lacing technique to stabilize / repair a
quarter crack. This is similar to Ian McKinley’s repair of a
thoroughbred.
